Creating a Butterfly Garden
Creating a butterfly garden is as easy as planting some milkweed seeds and letting them grow! You can plant them in your front yard, back yard, or even a couple of pots on your patio or balcony! Then sit back and watch the butterflies come!
There are different varieties of milkweed. Where ever you live, there are native milkweeds to your area. You can easily find those in nurseries in your area.

There is also a big favorite of the Monarch butterflies: the Asclepias-curassavic milkweed, also called "Tropical Milkweed". The Monarchs love to lay their eggs and eat this variety of milkweed. Thankfully, it is also one of the best to grow in California.
On top of being easy to grow, it is a prolific bloomer, widely available, easily propagated from cuttings and seeds, and a great source of nectar for all types of butterflies.
The Asclepias-curassavica milkweed is also fast growing and produces as much as 1,000 seeds to share. And please do share the seeds as the Monarch Butterfly is in grave danger of extinction.

The colonies of Monarch butterflies in Mexico, now occupy the smallest area known since record keeping began in 1993.
One of the main reasons for the decrease in the populations of these majestic insects (as with the honey bees as well) has been the increase use of chemicals and gmo's (genetically modified organism's) You can watch this 1 minute video to learn What is a GMO?
